A subsidiary body to the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants (POPs), the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC) is continuing efforts to prohibit the worldwide manufacture, import, export, and use of PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate and its salts).
In Japan the manufacture, import and use of PFOS are expected to be prohibited on April 1, 2010 under the Japanese Chemical Substances Control Law (Act on the Evaluation of Chemical Substances and Regulation of Their Manufacture, etc).
At Seiko Epson, indirect material (photoresist) containing PFOS is used in the manufacturing process of some semiconductor products.
The current thinking is that it is highly likely usage for semiconductor manufacturing will be exempted from restrictions, but in the near future, the materials will be difficult to obtain as suppliers decrease production.
In consideration of the environment, and taking into account future conditions, we at Seiko Epson plan to eliminate the use of PFOS from our semiconductor manufacturing process.
[Timetable for the elimination of PFOS from our semiconductor manufacturing process]
Elimination target date: By the end of September 2009
[No PFOS in our semiconductor products]
The use of PFOS has been limited to indirect materials. Our semiconductor products do not contain PFOS, even at trace level.

Epson recently had an inquiry about counterfeit semiconductors that closely resemble our products. Fraudulent devices do not meet Epson standards and could result in product failure.
Therefore, we strongly advise the purchase of devices directly from your regional sales office or one of our authorized distributors.
