Bumps on the internal surface of the glass substrate destroy the orientation of liquid crystal elements and have an adverse effect on the display. We have ever made every effort to flatten the surface, and finally we achieved it by introducing a brand new technology of polishing the surface in D4 Series or higher. This controls disruption of the orientation of liquid crystal elements around the glass substrate.

By flattening the surface of the glass substrate, the distance between two glasses consisting LCD (cell gap) can be narrowed. To be more precise, the gap is narrowed from 3µm in existing products to 2.5µm. Potential difference between upper and lower substrates becomes larger by narrowing the gap, which improves such performance as response speed and contrast ratio.

Is a time until the transmission reaches a given value when applying the on/off driving signal, and generally indicates the total of on/off response time. It is also called response speed. As the response time gets faster, afterimage disappears in motion pictures and imaging becomes sharp.

For LCD displays, it is a ratio of the brightness between bright status and dark status, or a ratio of luminosity. For example, white luminosity is 1000lm and black luminosity is 2lm when the contrast ratio is 500:1. If the contrast ratio is high, you can see a clear and firm image. For the home projectors, contrast ratio is important because movies including many dark scenes are often watched, and the brightness is not so important in office projectors.

It is often said that such performance as response speed and contrast ratio is improved by narrowing the cell gap. In D4 Series, response speed was improved as much as 25% compared to existing series, and contrast ratio was improved from 400:1 in existing ones to 500:1, using the new flattening technology to narrowing the cell gap to 2.5µm, as described above.

A layer to block the light in parts other than picture electrode placed in matrix pattern (black matrix). It is necessary because error may occur if the light is illuminated on the picture transistor.
Though lightproof layer around the pixels was used in some existing products, black matrix gets out of optimum position and the light is illuminated on the wiring area or the transistor area, if the facing substrates are not laminated precisely. D4 Series are designed independent of laminating precision by the lightproof layer structure completely surrounding TFT elements.

Color shading is a phenomenon in which a part of the display looks colored when LCD panel is projected with a projector, especially when gray level is displayed. We developed a color shading correction IC. It divides a display into 768 areas in maximum and corrects video signals per area. Color shading was significantly reduced by this technology.
